I still don't understand "P" fares

Others have posted about this, but I'm still confused.

I just purchased a "P" class ticket from Seattle to Chicago. I searched on united.com for "first class," and that's the fare that showed up.

I kept looking at the receipt and the web site. It never makes any mention of an upgrade. It's quite clearly sold as "first class." (If I search for "M" it will say that it's a "1K instant upgrade" fare.)

Yesterday, I had a delay, and I was at risk of misconnecting. The United ticket agent in Mexico City explained that I was traveling on an "upgrade" ticket, and that I "must have used miles or something." "You have a V fare," she explained. In reality, I had purchased a "P" ticket. No miles, no status, no GPUs or RPUs required.

I asked in the United Club in Mexico City. The agent was kind, but he explained that "P" is "in the middle." "It's like 'premium," he explained.

Where on the United site can one find any transparency? Is it in the receipt? In the booking process? I feel like this is a DOT complaint because United is giving the illusion of selling one class of service but it's actually another.
