Not a frequent flyer with United (and never been in this situation before), so would appreciate help from those in the know.
I bought a ticket in Z class (all segments) YYC-DEL return that was listed as refundable. Turns out that it IS refundable but with a penalty. After speaking with the UA call center folks, it turns out that I can either get the fare refunded and pay a $600 penalty, or change the ticket and pay a $500 penalty. In the latter case, I have to change to dates that are within one year of the date I purchased (May 19). It was after this point in the conversation that things got murky ... the answers I received were just very confusing - I got different answers at different points in my conversation. It may have been that the agent simply didn't understand my questions (I don't think English was his first language), or to be fair, perhaps I was just not asking them clearly enough. Anyway, I thought I'd come here for help.
So my questions:
Thanks everyone, appreciate insights. And ... if you have ideas on any other alternatives to handle this situation, would like to hear those as well.

So my questions:
- Can I just cancel my upcoming flights (Jun 29-Jul 11) and leave the amount on account until I am ready to decide whether I want to change or get a refund? I don't know yet whether this trip will need to be rescheduled or cancelled entirely (the wedding I was attending has been "postponed" but I don't know exactly what "postponed" means ... it could be code for cancelled!!).
- Do I have to book AND travel all segments by May 19, 2015, or can I just make a booking by May 19, 2015 but for dates further into the future?
- If I select the change option and the replacement ticket is a less value, can I apply the difference towards the $500 change fee and/or can I get a refund for the difference (less the $500 change penalty of course)?
