WT+ Upgrade Extra Bag Question

Currently booked in WT LHR - LAX. If I pay for an extra bag now in advance do I get this refunded if I upgrade to WT+ at check in?
Is it best to hold out paying for the extra bag until a check in upgrade has been ruled out?
