Advice please? BA/Avis Car Rental at LAX

We're travelling GLA-LHR-LAX in October, and took advantage of a slightly better deal by buying our fares and rental car at the same time on ba.com.

The inbound flight arrives (assuming it's on time) at 19.15, and the car is reserved at the Avis depot from that time. Thinking a little more about this, I'm not sure picking up the car at the end of a long day's travel is very smart. Yes, we're staying in an airport hotel that night, and yes, I've driven in the States many times before, but we'll have been on the go for 20-odd hours by the time we land.

I would ideally like to wait until the following morning to collect the car, but am getting conflicting answers from BA and Avis as to whether this will be okay.

Avis say they can't change the booking as it was made by BA, but that they'd "probably" hold our car for 24hrs before considering us a no-show. BA say we will have to pick up when we land, as to do otherwise would be "splitting the package", and that Avis could cancel our booking if we fail to show up within two hours.

The helpful BA agent did look into what it would cost us to amend the booking to reflect a pick-up 12 hours later, but they want £260 :O

What would you do? Take the chance that it'd be okay to turn up at 7am the next morning, or would you bite the bullet, put on your big girl/boy pants and just deal with the immediate pick-up and short drive to the hotel?
