Changing from Round Trip to One Way Nightmare, Please Advise!

Here's what happened:

Booked round trip from LGA-BOS on 8/15 for 8/23-8/24. Decided to drive up with brother on 8/23 and had to change from round trip to one way. Called DL and had to pay change fee of $150, which is understandable, and got rebooked on return trip as though its a one way ticket and had to pay the difference in fare with was about $100. In the process I lost my UG on the return trip since it was a new ticket. I now would like to take the train back to NYC and called DL to cancel my ticket and store my funds from this ticket and they want me to pay another $150 change fee. From what I thought, I had essentially bought a new one way ticket and was within the 24 hour window. I thought this as I had to pay the difference in fare for that 1 way, which was more than the original round trip and had lost my UG and also had a new ticket number. Apparently since it's linked to my old ticket I need to pay another change fee. I can see where this is a rule, but it's absolutely ridiculous.

To put it another way: if I had just canceled my round trip and bought a new one way, I would have paid the initial $150 change fee and the same difference in ticket price and also would have been able to cancel now w/o paying another $150. It's really just a technicality that's requiring me to pay another $150.

I find this particularly irking given that I have now paid around $700 for a 45 min and have to pay another $150 change fee. I understand there is probably some detail in delta's business model that makes this appropriate for them but as a normal person this doesn't make logical sense. I paid more to get bumped down on the same flight to a lower cabin...
