Selecting seats on Award flights

I booked MSY-MIA economy on AA metal with BA Avois. I have Oneworld Sapphire and have been able to choose seats in main cabin extra on previous occasions.

I contacted AA and they insist I can not choose seats using OW Sapphire on award tickets either free or for a fee. Is this new to AA

Anyone with experience of this?
