I've seen this question asked elsewhere, but I'm not sure if the answers apply in my case.
I have an EU passport that expires mid-October, and a US passport that expires on the 16th of September. I just found out I need to leave for the EU on the 16th. I set up an appointment at the local US Passport agency, but their earliest appointment is Monday the 8th, and it takes 8 business days to get your passport back. If they take all 8, I will have already left the country.
1. Could they mail me in Paris my new US passport? Or send it to the US embassy there for me to pickup?
I read it's possible to enter the US on an expired US passport (they just ask you extra questions), but the biggest issue is getting a visa for my valid EU passport so they'll let me on the plane (also, because my EU one expires in one month, they might not let me on for that reason alone). I looked online at the Visa Waiver Program, and it requires an electronic passport (a band or some such that an e-reader can look at it). My EU passport is too old to have this (obviously, since it's going to expire soon).
The closest Irish consulate is in San Francisco, and I'm in Los Angeles. I will only be in Paris for a little over a week, so I don't think I'd be able to get a visa from the Irish Embassy while I'm there. Not sure.
2. Do I need to get a US visa on my Irish passport to get on the plane back to the US? If so, how can I get one for my old EU passport with no local consulates? Would I be able to get a valid visa on my Irish passport in the five or so business days I'll be in Paris?
Thanks in advance, wise ones!
