We have an itinerary October 23-Nov 5 as follows: DFW-MAD (overnight), train to BCN (5 nights), then BCN-Rioja, specifically based in Haro, to explore a little but mostly relax and hike in the Spanish countryside.
I'm debating whether we should rent a car in BCN for the trip to Haro, train to Haro and rent a car there, or simply hire rides for exploring Rioja. We will be doing a lot of winery visits, so obviously driving would be out of the question for those. I've had my fill of winery excursions in Provence, Sonoma, etc., and having to spit out all day to avoid drinking and driving! We'll hire a car and driver service for the times we are visiting wineries, but I'm wondering how feasible it is to explore other things in the area. Based in Haro, are there any must do's we should go to, and would need a car to get to? The rental prices are very reasonable, so cost isn't an issue.
We are also overnighting back in MAD for our return flight, so we have the option of either driving the rental back, or taking a train back, for our last night. Suggestions? Thanks in advance!
