OK, so I finally got in the 2-4-1 game and would love to be able to use a it on a trip in F to Australia (I know, I know - like hens teeth and all that!). I haven't reached the required spend yet, but thought I'd better be up to speed for when I do.
I can be totally flexible, but this is obviously one of the hardest routes. I'd probably be looking anywhere between end of December to March, but it being summer that might be even harder. Would be happy to look at other times of the year, too. We'd probably look at 2-3 weeks out there.
Can you book a single on a 2-4-1 and then change when the return becomes available? Is that the best strategy, or would you suggest the dummy return (if that's even available)? Is it a case of looking at midnight on any days that would work? From what I've read, BA doesn't release seats every day. I'm pretty happy to put in the work for something like this!
Am I correct that using a 2-4-1 limits options to the direct BA ones on this route (BA15/16)? This means creative routing is harder I guess, unless I shell out more Avios (something like HKG or KUL return or open jaw say LHR-(SIN-)SYD/HKG-LHR and getting a CX or QF booking separately if available). Any suggestions would be great.
Would anyone suggest doing a stopover, or does that make it even harder? I've not been to SIN, so would happily have a couple of days there.
If it doesn't work out, there are plenty of places that I haven't been to. However, I'm unlikely to go that kind of distance on holiday very often so since we have the Avios, it would be great to go there. Wherever we go, I'd like to use the Avios in F since we usually UUA to CW and therefore a straight redemption in Club doesn't seem that good value to me (though I understand I may need to be flexible!).
Any advice/recommendations would be gratefully received!
