I've had a presidential plus credit card for years, and generally have had enough miles between travel/purchases to get gold elite each year. However, I've only traveled about 12,000 miles this year, and will have about 26K EQM from credit card.
My understanding is that credit card itself will allow priority boarding. And the main Gold benefit is immediate Economy Plus upgrades. While Silver allows those upgrades 48 hours before, I'm seeing that generally those seats are often taken by then.
So.... I'm thinking it doesn't make sense to use those credit card EQM (ie, about 13K) to upgrade to Silver. Instead, perhaps just pay for Economy Plus upgrades next year (not planning on a lot of travel), and then easily go for Gold following year (using mainly credit card EQM).
