I did a search and could not find the info that I need on this, so I am asking here. I want to fly to SYD, with a stopover in LAX from BOS on American. If I book a BOS-SYD RT in BZ or PE the cost lets say is $X. However, if I book two RT tickets on the same American flights (BOS-LAX and LAX-SYD), the cost is about $500/pp cheaper. I'd love to do this, but Im unsure if I can check my bags to SYD when I check-in for the first flight BOS-LAX. and worried I'd have to go through bag claim, recheck-in and then security. The connection time is about 2 h.
So the question is, can I check all the way through on both outbound to SYD and back if I have two separate tickets on American for the same flights as I would have taken any way for a single ticket.
If I can, I may mix the cabins up to save even more and maybe to PE to/from LAX and save the BZ for the 15 h to/from SYD.
