going to CAN/HKG from SFO and have a few options. I asked this on *A forum but no one replied after several days so posting here with more choices.
assumptions: paying cash. Personal vacation. Cost between these are equal and not a factor.
1. SFO-NRT (the room) (20 hours layover) HND-CAN
Return leg does not have (the room) available.
Pros: I have another vacation trip to Japan and Singapore in January (one month before the new trip in question) flying ANA old business (the room not available on my route). If I fly ANA for my Feb vacation I can try out the room, something I always wanted to do.
I also get to stay a night in Japan which is always nice (a country I visited 10+ times already for fun)
cons: return trip is on old ANA which I consider to be inferior to J seats of UA/CX/AA/DL/BR/CI.
I also dont love flying two long flights
2. SFO-SIN (one night layover) SIN-CAN all in J
pros: I have flown SQ business between SFO and ICN and JFK and FRA, but I never flew SFO-SIN before. In fact this would be the longest flight I will have taken in my life in a nice cabin. Since my goal has been trying every business class products of every airlines (have been vacationing exclusively in C for last ten years), I always feel that SQ SFO-SIN is something to cross off my bucket list.
Cons: the total flight time is ridiculous. I am too old to do mileage run now (40 years old) so I always try to fly as direct as possible. (I will never fly crappy or Chinese airlines though so forget about the daily direct on SFO-CAN on China southern) the bad part is the SIN-CAN and the return leg that mirrors it. It just seems a waste of time that I could be spending sightseeing China. (Dont get me run I used to do my share of MR in college and would fly excessively unnecessarily to rack up miles so I understand the appeal.)
3. SFO-HKG-CAN on CX in J
pros: shortest and most direct. CX is fine but
cons: I heard CX quality had drastically degraded since Chinese takeover and Covid. Its nothing like its former self. I flew CX extensively in the past (I am Chinese) so am very familiar with its product and I just worry I will be disappointed, and missing out on the room.
4. SFO-ZRH-HKG on LX in F
pros: F products. Mileage run worthy distance. Never visited Zurich this trip gives me seven hour layover.
con: a LOT more flying than all other choices.
