Timliness of schedule change notifications

Just curious how much time an airline (AA in this case) has before they inform a passenger of a schedule change, in this case, when travel is several months away. Is it at the time the change is made or do they have leeway to not do it until closer to the flight? The change, in this case, was for next year and involved them taking me off the BA codeshare I originally had and putting me on AA metal (all was on an AA ticket). The time was only about 15 minutes different, no big deal. I only noticed this as I periodically check my itineraries just for this issue and to be sure the tickets are in order. I saw they reissued the tickets on Nov 4th and I checked it on Nov 23. I never received a schedule notice. They do have my email and phone on file as this was the second change (they did notify me of the first change and updated ticket number). The reason I check now and then is I feel it is better to catch any issues early versus later. I am glad I checked as the seats they gave me in business were in the back row, middle area. I as able to change them to window seats closer to the front.
