Mixed cabin in F and J - understanding my options

tldr: group of 7 traveling CPT-DXB-LAX, currently 4 booked in F and 3 in J. Given F0 for the CPT-DXB leg, and F4 for the DXB-LAX leg, trying to understand the best way to get everyone in F via miles or money. thanks.

Hi Emirates flyers, I am trying to fly with a group of 7 in F from CPT-DXB-LAX, but am running into some challenges now that the F cabin on the first leg appears to be full (4 of us booked in that), though there still appears to be 4 F seats on the DXB-LAX leg available for the remaining 3.
  • I couldn't find an option to book J on the first leg and F on the second leg for the remaining three of us, so I called in and was very surprised to learn that a mixed cabin itinerary is simply not possible on Emirates. I've never really run into that before on an airline.
  • I went ahead and booked the remaining 3 of us in J, hoping we can upgrade somehow on the second leg. When I select cash upgrade, it says "no options" but when I select miles upgrade, it does say I can select "auto upgrade" for 95k should an upgrade become available, but none are available now. I am reading online the auto upgrade function doesn't work well.
  • It seems like a cash upgrade may be offered closer to check in, but that remains unclear to me.
After reading online a bit, it seems that the best possibility is to be "ready" to transfer 95k miles into Skywards per ticket, and enquire at the CPT check in counter if the miles upgrade possibility in available on the DXB-LAX route. And if yes, we can transfer the miles and upgrade those legs. Does that seem like the best plan to everyone? thanks so much
