We are inviting our in-laws to Hawaii from China. They are both Chinese citizens, holding Chinese passports with valid U.S. visitor visas. I booked their flights from HND to HNL on Delta One and purchased separate tickets for their travel from China to HND. This means that when they fly from China to HND and from HNL to HND, they will need to reclaim their bags, go through Japanese customs, and check in again for their connecting flights.
To be safe, they applied for a Japanese transit visa. However, the visa is only valid for 15 days, while our trip to Hawaii lasts 20 days.
Here is their itinerary for reference:
- 4/12: China Eastern PVG → HND (6-hour layover), then Delta HND → HNL
- 5/1: Delta HNL → HND (5-hour layover), then 5/2 at 00:10 China Eastern HND → PVG
Since they will use the transit visa on 4/12 at HND, it will expire on 4/27.
My questions:
1. On 5/1, at the HNL Delta counter, will Delta allow check-in if their Japanese transit visa has expired?
2. Will Delta assist with the Shore Pass application at HNL or HND?
