Hi all,
I was on BA10 yesterday which diverted to Delhi for a medical emergency ( passenger having chest pains, later on crew member said she thought he had had a stroke). It was all dealt with extremely professionally by the crew, as you would expect. We were only on the ground at Delhi for about an hour and then we were off again, only landing at LHR 2 hours late.
It got me thinking though , how much does a diversion cost? We were dumping fuel for about 40 minutes. The extra landing fees and ground services that the plane needs all add up. Does the airline try and claim off the gentleman's travel insurance? Or do they insure themselves against this event?
Thankfully it doesn't happen too often. The crew member I spoke to said it was only about the 6th one she had seen in 26 years of flying.
