Can award stays be cut short for a points refund?

I know that points reservations can be cancelled without penalty in general, but does that apply after I have started the stay?

If I have, for example, 3 nights booked at a HIX using points but decide after 2 nights that I want to checkout a night early, will I get refunded the points that I paid for the third night?
