Lounge access denial on Virgin Australia

Hi all,

I am a Etihad Guest Gold member, travelling on Virgin Australia from PER to DPS today on a VA award ticket.

Departing from the International Terminal I was denied access to the VA-contracted Singapore Airlines SilverKris lounge.
Only VA Velocity members with status or business class travellers are allowed in, according to the Singapore lady, although the Etihad website seems to state that Etihad Gold members should have lounge access to all VA flights..

Should I have asked/demanded a lounge voucher at check-in for the lounge?
But then again.. how could I have known in advance the lounge was going to be a contracted one, that would give me entry issues?!
