Hey guys,
I hope you are all well and enjoyed the rather nice weather we had the last few days!
So earlier today at work, I was talking to a colleague who just got back from Munich on Sunday. She was sat on the exit row (12B) and noted that the flight was very full. She was travelling with HBO but was invited to check her bags in at the check in counters. She boarded with Group 1 and told me that the cabin over head bins were already half full even before Groups 4 and beyond started boarding.
Once boarding was completed, there were at least 10 other passengers with oversized cabin suitcases that needed to be put in the hold which added a 15 minute delay to her departure. She noticed that the passenger in 12D had put his oversized rucksack under the seat in front of him despite cabin crew making announcements to put bags in the hold. She showed me the picture and bag was indeed to big to be placed under the seat in front of him and was even poking out.
The plane then pushed back and safety demo was done by the crew. One of the crew came to her and the row next to her (DEF) to make sure that they all understood the requirements for the exit row. This was assumed then that the crew would take the bag and place it somewhere but this apparently did not happen but she was certain that the staff member saw the bag as she looked down on the floor. She said it was as if the crew pretended not to have seen it.
It was only until 5 minuteds after the engine were on and the plane was on the way to the runway that another crew noticed and confronted the colleague about it and overheard that she 'didn't see it'. The passenger next to her had to get her attention but was unable to since everyone was settled for take off. In the end, the cabin crew had to quickly alert the CSM and inform the pilot to slow down so they could quickly stow the bag in the front section of the cabin with some reshuffling of other passenger's belonging.
She and the passengers in her row had a discussion that it was a safety breach and though the likelihood of an emergency while taxiing is low, it could affect the whole evacuation process.
She did tell me that the passenger next to her intends to raise it to BA and have decided to do it too.
Any thoughts? Was it a safety breach or a potential safety breach that needed to be raised to BA?
I've had flights with AA and Delta in the past where I was asked to put my small backpack in front of the seat of me while sat in an exit row (my rucksack was tiny) and also noticed that US carriers allow passengers to put their shades down during take off, taxi and landing too.
